Qigong is based on the understanding that each person is a microcosm of the entire universe. This Microcosmic Orbit Meditation allows us to understand the nature of the universe through our own felt experience. In the cosmos, energy is constantly moving in circles. The earth turning on its axis, the planets spinning around the sun, or the sun spiralling around the centre of the Milky Way galaxy, all things in the cosmos find equilibrium through circular motion. As a part of the cosmos, the energy within our bodies is constantly circulating, right down to the spinning of atoms through each of our trillion cells. Because the Microcosmic Orbit mirrors the nature of the universe, it is also referred to as “small heavenly circulation.” When our Qi circulates smoothly throughout the Microcosmic Orbit, it becomes easier to find a peaceful and nourishing flow with the forces that surround us. In this mediation we are using the breath to circulate Qi through the two central meridians of the body, the Yang “Du Mai” or Governing Vessel which runs up the back of the body and the Yin “Ren Mai” or Conception Vessel that runs down the front. These two meridians are the first meridians to form when we are embryos, they help to regulate the flow of Yin and Yang energy within the body and are said to distribute our original or constitutional Qi. As the Yin and Yang harmonize health and vitality improve, giving greater mental clarity and strengthening a connection to our higher truths. This practice can help you cultivate a calm and connected state of consciousness, let go of stress, recharge your energy, and experience a deep sense of synergy with the universe’s energy.
