Bring on new thrills, spills & chills for Bianca with this nostalgic amusement park - the Star City in CCP Complex, Pasay City. Let’s see what it’s like strolling in the Star City after the Holiday rush. Personally, this is just our 2nd time here since it was established in 1991 as an offshoot of the annual Toys & Gift Fair, a Christmas exhibition by then PhilCite or the Philippine Center for International Trade & Exhibit.

Star City was already a favorite holiday destination for many Filipino families before the Enchanted Kingdom came along in 1995. Which begs the question, which amusement park is better nowadays? If we are talking about size, Star City’s 3.5 hectares of park facilities owned by the Elizalde family pales in comparison to EK’s huge 25 hectares. Because of its size, EK has more spaces to walk, goof & run around while Star City feels like cramped with its limited space in the city.

By accessibility, the Star City is closer to all major cities in Metro Manila where the bulk of the patrons are while EK is too far-off for non-planned trips. We would be biased to say Star City gets more points from us since it’s only 15 minutes away from home in Paranaque via the Skyway even if EK is just barely an hour via SLEX. Both have been a popular side trip for educational field trips.

Star City also has more rides, games & attractions than EK but the latter has bigger & more quality rides. So it depends whether you opt for quantity or quality. Star City hosts the Giant Star Wheel, the tallest Ferris wheel in the Philippines back in 2012. Currently, it’s the 3rd tallest in the country after the 2 Sky Eyes but it’s still bigger than the Wheel of Fate of EK. With its 32-airconditioned gondolas, it provides the most exciting views of Manila Bay, CCP Complex & Roxas Boulevard. Star City also has not one but two carousels, an indoor two-deck grand carousel & an outdoor.

This brings us to the biggest attraction each one offers. EK boasts the Agila EKsperience which is included in the ticket price. This definitely amuses all visitors here (it’s even better than FlyOver Canada) & provides meaningful excursions for students as well. With its state-of-the-art facilities, the building itself, if seen from a bird’s eyeview like an Agila, has become an icon here that resembles the sun in our Philippine flag with 8 rays. This is the most valuable value-added attraction of EK – one that promotes the country’s best tourist destinations.

Whereas Star City features the Snow World allowing you to experience White Christmas with snowfall all while being clad in arctic jacket, gloves & earmuffs (with additional costs). Here the temperature is down to -15 degrees Celsius but you can go to a coffee shop inside to keep warm. Yes, there’ll be snowmen mascots to entertain the kids & kids at heart. Sliding on one of the world’s longest ice slides is a must here. However, cameras are not allowed inside & you can have photo ops only for another bill.

As to comfort & convenience, Star City, the country’s only all-weather theme park, is about 90% roofed over in 2 storeys with air-condition. So when it rains or too sunny, Star City lets you covered in relief. There’s no aircon in EK so it’s best to ride in the evening which is recommended since it’s more romantic at night. Further EK has more exciting shows in every zone, concerts & dazzling fireworks while Star City has none.

For food & drinks, Star City has way more options with fastfood outlets & also more affordable with budget eats than EK. For some, the tiangge in Star City is the main attraction here with its cheaper clothing, toys & gifts than say Greenhills. It also has more comfort rooms than EK so worry not for the call of nature.

Our 3-year old daughter rode the Grand Carousel & Antique Cars. She enjoyed the Kids’ Playland, too & of course the Snow World. Toddlers must be accompanied by their parent/s or responsible, mature person/s in all kiddie rides that include the Kiddie Bumper Cars, Mini Pirate Ship, Quack Quack, Kiddie Wheel & Frosty Train.

Other world-class rides & attractions are: Super Telecombat, Wacky Worm, Star Frisbee, Star Flyer, Surf Dance, Jungle Splash, Egyptian Spinning Coaster, Tornado Ride, Music Express, Bumper Car Smash, Jumping Star, Lolly Swing, Fun Swing, Mini Rocking Tug, Seahorse Viking, Scream Avenue 4D Rider, Time Warp Adventure, Dinosaur Alive, Digital Surround Theater & Gabi ng Lagim.

Star City is located within the Cultural Center of the Philippines complex, part of Bay City. Park schedule is on Thursdays & Fridays from 2PM to 10 PM & on weekends from 1 PM to 10 PM. Currently, ticket prices called the Star Pass amounting to PhP699 gives access to the park & all rides subject to individual restrictions. Snow World is subject to a separate fee of PhP200. Token-operated games & rides are separate charges. Star City was re-opened on February 24, 2022, two years after a fire hit the park’s main building on October 2, 2019.
