The Valley of the Kings
The Valley of the Kings is one of the most famous sights of Egypt. This is because this necropolis, or city of the dead, is one of the most important excavation sites in the world. It is located on the west side of the Nile near the modern city of Luxor and was once part of ancient Egypt's capital Thebes.
In the dry valley between barren rocks, mainly the pharaohs of the new empire of Ancient Egypt (1550-1070 B.C.) had burial chambers built deep into the rock as their final resting place. To date, 64 such tombs have been rediscovered and uncovered. But researchers agree that many more still lie hidden in the shelter of the valley. A completely new tomb was discovered as recently as 2012, followed by more previously unknown chambers in Tutankhamun's tomb in 2019. An adventure playground for archaeologists.
It is true that most of these stone resting places are reserved for kings. But burial chambers of private individuals have also been found here. Three of the known tombs were even designed for animals.
The Valley of the Kings became known to the world through the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922. The entrance to the burial chamber was still sealed, unlike most other sites. A true sensational find. Thousands of grave goods were attached to the dead to accompany the pharaoh, who died at a young age, on his journey to the underworld. Especially famous is the golden death mask of Tutankhamum, which can be seen in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
