Today's item of firearm "received wisdom" is the old adage that you should NOT mix gun oils. Is true or it a myth? Brownells Gun Techs™ Caleb and Steve point out that, "All gun oils are not created equal." Caleb tells us about some empirical evidence our friends at Sons of Liberty Gun Works discovered when testing their new SPEC76 gun oil. Different gun oils have different formulas and additives that can lead to "unwanted results" when you combine them. Worst case scenario: two oils react badly to each other and solidify to gum up your gun's action. When you switch from one oil to a new one, you should thoroughly clean ALL the old oil out of the gun before applying the new. There are some situations where it's OK or you may even want to mix gun oils - the guys explain how that works. (Hint: mixing a simple, thin oil like Remington's Rem-Oil with Break-Free probably won't lead to disaster.) Even so, the "myth" is NOT BUSTED. If you don't mix gun oils, you won't have to worry about your gun being sidelined by an adverse chemical reaction!
