THE BEST DIY SHOP AIR CLEANER!? ///DIY SHOP AIR FILTER!
What's going on everyone!? I'm back in the shop and I'm building a air filtration system out of a 240 volt furnace blower that I got for free!
Normally I walk into my projects with some sort of drawing or 3D model to work from, but this time I did it all on the fly. The filter box is made out of 1/2" plywood measuring 24"x24"x15" and the duct is roughly 40" long and inside dimensions of 8"x10". I thought adding a duct would help move the freshly filtered air away from the intake to prevent cycling the already filtered air and help move the air more efficiently throughout my shop. The filter I'm using is a 20"x 20"x 2" MERV 11, so its going to offer a good amount filtration! MERV ratings are scored (1-13) 1 being the worst, and 13 being the best. (There are MERV filters measuring as high as 16 to 20, but those are used in hospitals, nuclear power plants, clean rooms, etc...)
Once my filter assembly and duct was built, I hung it from my shop ceiling using four 3/8" threaded rod to make a trapeze from my trusses. With it hung I ran a switched 240v outlet ran off an existing 240v 20amp circuit to power the unit up. The motor only draws 1.5 amps so it should never being an issue running it at the same time as I'm using any of my larger 240v tools (table saw, band saw, jointer, etc..) I'm a one man operation so I can only use one of those larger tools at a time😜
aside from replacing the motor that I blew up🤦🏻♂️ I only needed 1 sheet of 1/2" plywood, four 3/8"x 36" threaded rod. so it was fairly cheap to build!
