Shaukiwan is a neighborhood in the Eastern District of Hong Kong Island. Shau Kei is the Chinese word for a basket used to wash rice, much like a colander, and Wan means "bay". The name, which appeared at least as early as the Ming Dynasty in the book The Great Chronicles of Yue, refers to the former shape of the nearby bay, which is now named Aldrich Bay, after a British Army major who improved troop discipline.

Shau Kei Wan lacks large-scale malls, instead it is a treasure trove where residents and visitors can find authentic local items. Of particular note is Kam Wa Street Farmers’ Market, which bears witness to the development of Shau Kei Wan. In the old days local fishermen flocked to the street selling fish; what started out with few hawker stalls gradually turned into hundreds and has now become a popular wet market. The street mainly attracts housewives in the area and lures residents from surrounding neighbourhoods like Chai Wan and Tai Koo which is conveniently reachable by bus and the tram. The government initially worked on a covered wet market on Shau Kei Wan Main East Street to accommodate Kam Wa Street Wet Market’s remaining vendors, but the new market was badly run and closed down last year. On the contrary, Kam Wa Street Wet Market is still in operation.

It has another famous food street—Shau Kei Wan Main East Street, where Tin Hau Temple and ShingWong Temple are located. SKW Main East Street was originally closer to the shore where fishermen used to peddle seafood. However, later on, reclamation works brought about a radical change to the promenade area. As the community expanded, SKW Main East Street was teeming with eateries and eventually made a big name for food in the Eastern District. There are countless dining options along the street, from traditional restaurants to various Asian cuisines, such as Japanese, Korean and Thai. But it’s the local street food that grabs the spotlight, including egg waffles, Siu Mai and Hong-Kong-style deep fried chicken. With the glory of fishery in its early years, the street is also renowned for fish ball noodle shops. Be warned, there are usually long queues on weekends!
