I will be doing the post-mortem analysis for both characters as a seperate video, as the inclusion of that segment is turning my short form videos into long form videos.  Also, doing it as a separate video allows me to go into more detail.
My analysis of Exar Kun will draw from his appearances in the Dark Lords Of The Sith and The Great Sith War arcs of the Tales Of The Jedi series, with background details drawn from Jedi Vs. Sith: The Essential Guide To The Force, the original Essential Guide To Weapons And Technology, the Knights Of The Old Republic Campaign Guide, among others.
My breakdown of Darth Maul is intended to be completely void of any connection to the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, and so will be drawn purely from pre-2008 Legends material. I will be drawing from his appearance in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, its novelization, comic adaptation, and visual dictionary; the Expanded Universe novel Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter and the included short story, Darth Maul: Saboteur; the Dark Horse comic miniseries Darth Maul; the comic shorts Nameless and Marked, both presented in the Star Wars: Tales anthology series;the New Essential Guide To Characters; and the Threats Of The Galaxy Campaign Guide.
Retconning his backstory from simple Iridonian Zabrak to Dathomirian Nightbrother reduces him from a diamond-in-the-rough prodigy to a manufactured product of selective breeding, and changing his Sith tattoos into Nightbrother clan sigils takes what should be a symbol of his personal dedication to Sith ideology and turns it into a mere slave brand. The writers of TCW were clearly attempting to give Maul's character depth and significance, but what they achieved was the opposite, reducing him to a self-important tool in the hands of a lesser villain.
To hell with that, Legends all the way.
And with all of that out of the way, let us being: Exar Kun, renegade Jedi turned Sith revivalist, and Darth Maul, the warrior-assassin trained from birth. If these two noted duelists, masters of the saberstaff, were to meet in single combat, who would win?
