4. Add the onion and green chili and fry for 5-7 minutes until the onion is softened.
5. Add the tomatoes and cook for 5-7 minutes more, or until they are softened and mushy.
6. Add the lentils, rice, turmeric powder, and salt to the pot.
7. Add enough water to cover the lentils and rice by about 2 inches.
8. Bring the pot to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover.
9. Simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils and rice are cooked through.
10. Garnish with cilantro and serve with a side of vegetables or meat.

Tips

* If you don't have time to cook the lentils and rice separately, you can use a pressure cooker to speed up the process.
* To make the dal chawal more flavorful, you can add some ghee or butter to the pot when you add the lentils and rice.
* You can also add some vegetables to the dal chawal, such as carrots, peas, or potatoes.
