I’ve done credit card product changes with Citi before over the phone, but in this video, I decided to use the online chat feature and show you the transcript!
TO ACCESS CITI CHAT SUPPORT
1. Log into your online Citi account
2. Scroll down to the bottom until you see the grey footer
3. Under the Help & Support column, click on Chat With Us
4. If you don’t see the Chat With Us option, choose Contact Us instead. Then on the next page select Message Us.
PROS – CITI CREDIT CARD PRODUCT CHANGES
1. No Inquiry: A hard pull on your credit report is not performed when changing from 1 Citi card to another.
2. No New Account Opened: A product change does not result in a new card account on your credit report, which could have lowered your average age of accounts and your credit score (temporarily).
3. Preserve Account History: Your payment history, account age, and credit limit all remain intact.
4. Does Not Count Towards Chase 5/24 Rule: Because a new card account isn’t opened, your 5/24 count won’t change.
CONS – CITI CREDIT CARD PRODUCT CHANGES
1. No Bonus: You won’t receive a welcome bonus for a product change.
2. No New Credit Line: By product changing, you’ll keep the same credit limit (i.e. no new credit will be added). Didn’t mention this one in the video.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- Shortly after confirming the product change request, I received a credit card tracker in my Citi mobile app and online account showing that the account change was processed. It will also show when the new Citi Custom Cash card has shipped and when it’s activated & ready for use.
- My account number remained the same when going from the Citi Simplicity Card to the Citi Custom Cash card.
- My billing cycle also remained the same (i.e. same open date & close date).
