REMEMBER 1997

And so the year 2017 is upon us. 20 years ago at this moment, the year 1997 had just begun. Little did we know just how much this year would have in store for the world. Titanic crashed into theaters, and became the first movie to gross over $1 billion, and would go on to win eleven Oscars. Good Will Hunting and As Good as It Gets proved to be heavy hitters as well. The Disney Renaissance continued with everyone's favorite gladiator, Hercules! And who could forget the Men in Black? They may not let us remember any alien sightings, but we certainly can't forget them. Disney's One Saturday Morning block was launched on ABC, premiering with classics such as Recess, Pepper Ann, and Science Court. But animation wasn't just for families. Shows such as King of the Hill, South Park, and Daria proved even further that animation could also appeal to teens and adults. Steve Irwin became a household name when The Crocodile Hunter premiered, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer slayed audiences with a show that would lead to a spin-off and quite the dedicated fanbase. In the world of video games, 3D gameplay was really hitting it's stride. Star Fox 64, Mario Kart 64, and GoldenEye all revolutionized gaming on the N64. But without question, the biggest hit that year was Final Fantasy VII, a game that had a massive impact on the gaming industry as a whole, making JRPGs mainstream. In the world of music, grunge was pretty much dead. Alt-rock and metal were still quite popular, but teen pop and boy bands such as the Backstreet Boys were on the rise. And who could forget the craze that was Tamagotchi, the toy that wasted so many hours and caused so many kids to get in trouble at school because they couldn't pause their device and didn't want their pet to die while they were away at school (this happened to my older sister's best friend many times). 20 years ago at this moment, the year 1997 had just begun.
