In aanloop naar het Kurtág Festival (8 – 11 maart) reisden Gerrie de Vries en Pierre-Laurent Aimard midden februari af naar Boedapest om daar te repeteren met György Kurtág. In het Budapest Music Centre werkten ze onder anderen aan de stamelcantate What is the Word, een indrukwekkend stuk voor stem en piano over het verliezen van je spraakvermogen. Gerrie de Vries werkte eerder met Kurtág samen aan What is the Word en heeft het alleenrecht op de uitvoering van het stuk. Pierre-Laurent Aimard kent Kurtág en zijn muziek al decennia en bracht veel van zijn muziek in première.
Aimard en de Vries vertellen na de repetitie over hun ervaringen met deze bijzondere componist, die dit jaar 97 is geworden en nog iedere dag componeert.
Van 8 t/m 11 maart 2023 vindt het Kurtág Festival plaats in het Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam. Een groots eerbetoon aan de meester van de miniatuur, met concerten, films, een expositie, lezing, en inleidingen. Gerrie de Vries en Pierre-Laurent Aimard voeren ‘What is the Word’ uit op vrijdag 10 maart in het avondconcert Vocale sleutelwerken van Kurtág.

Singer Gerrie de Vries and pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard travelled to Budapest for rehearsals with György Kurtág in the run up to the Kurtág Festival (8-11 March). Amongst other pieces, they worked on the stammercantate What is the Word, an impressive work for voice and piano about losing the ability to speak. Gerrie de Vries has previously worked alongside Kurtág on this piece, and currently holds the sole right to perform it. Pierre-Laurent Aimard in turn has known Kurtág for decades and premiered numerous of his works.
