Nikon D80 vs Sony A5100 comparison? Which is better? Best camera for beginners? Nikon vs Sony! Who will win?

Hi everyone, this is JD, your gadget review friend.

Although we're reviewing a lot of phones and comparing them, photography and video editing is one of our stronger suite. That's why our channel revolves on review, tips and camera comparison. Today, we will answer a definite question that a lot of people ask. Should I buy a new camera, a mirrorless for example or buy a used and cheap professional setup? And what do you get our of it. I just need minutes of your time and I will give you a deginite answer, that is simple, concise and friendly. We will give three definite answers. If you own an old dslr, dont forget to subscribe my friend, lets go!

What do you get out of it?

When we ask that question, Should I buy a new camera or buy an old one. We have to ask ourselves What do you get out of it? So, lets say we have $600 to spare, what can we buy?

First we have a brand new Sony A5100. We bought it around 600 dollars brand new. I will have a seperate video for this camera so stay tuned but today we will look at it as it is. Its a 24 megapixel crop sensor with flip screen and a kit lens. This setup is mainly for vlogging and casual shooting. It will take decent photos but do not expect heaven and earth differemce compared to a camera phone. Unless you buy few sony lenses for this, its a decent camera for vlogging or casual photography is.

And on the right we have Nikon D80... Its a 10 megapixel ccd sensor camera without video recording function. so this is perfect for someone who uses camera for photography. This camera is less than $100 used and you can find this anywhere. If you have 600 you can still add these lenses...

First you have a $200 used tokina 12-24 f4. Next is your $150 portrait lens. I have the Nikon 50mm f1.8 that is perfect for profesional portrait shots. this is cheap awesome lens. And lastly, your zoom lens, we have the $100 sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6.

Also, for low light shots, you can buy a $5 diffuser from eBay, amazon or your local camera shop, this will help you manage that strong light coming from the in body flash or to step up your game buy a $40 flash from amazon. This will give you great results. I took this flash one time on a christmas party event and the people there went crazy with the images I made with it. Some of them still uses those photos even today.

So, imagine what you can get with your $600.

What result will you get out of it?

The second question we need to ask ourselves is what result will you get out of it. Of course if your using it for youtube, video recording or vlogging you must go for the newer camera today as all of them has video recording. You can go for a 4k camera, this A5100 only has full hd recording.

But if you only need still memories, this setup of Nikon D80 or any older dslr with good lenses will give you awesome photos. Lets shoot real life photos for landscape, telephoto, portrait shots and low light.

What do you need it for?

And our last question to conclude it, we ask ourselves, What do you need it for?

If you need a camera for vlogging you need to go for a mirrorless camera with a flip screen. It is lighter and gives you functional selfie screen to work on. But thats it. maybe use it as a casual camera but I would bet your phone can do the same thing. maybe its just me but unless you buy expensive lenses to step up your mirrorless photography game, the images you will get from a kit lens is no better than phone camera images.

But if you need a profesional setup you can grow into, then go with an affordable camera body and invest on your lenses. If you grew you lens ecosystem, which ever brnad you chose, you xan always change you camera body ang upgrade in the future.

Lenses are far more important than camera body. Camera are just a tool to drive the lens but the lens will provide the look you need.

If you are a beginner and you want to learn photography, Nikon D40, D60 or D80 are the best solutions. If you need video recording capability, maybe a D90 or a D3200 are the cheapest recommendation I can give you.

Photography is all about creativity but if you have the right equipment, it will be more effective.
