During the surf rock movement in Southern California in the early 1960s, a group of four talented high school boys made the scene forming a band called The Surfaris who wrote and recorded the instrumental song titled "Wipe Out" in 1963. It reached #2 on the US Top 40 and became an international hit selling over one million copies and earning a gold record. The energetic drum solo and maniacal introduction made the song one of the best remembered instrumentals of that era. That drum solo became the yardstick for every aspiring young drummer in the early 1960's. Another group called The Impacts are credited with recording a totally different instrumental by the same title. Also, a California doo-wop group, The Safaris (different spelling) filed a lawsuit laying claim to a band name infringement, but wound up losing the suit. Another surf rock band, The Challengers, released a cover version of "Wipe Out" in 1966.
