Deborah's Journey with Writing The Kleshas - with Deborah Adele. Kleshas Ep. 12.

Deborah shares her story of writing the Kleshas book, including how taking a bad fall on the Superior Hiking Trail, which resulted in surgery and a cast on her arm, was actually a gift. As she asked herself questions such as, "Where do my beliefs come from?" and "Can I let other people have their beliefs?" she realized that the Kleshas were keeping her mind in a cast. Her mind was as rigid in its belief system as the cast on her arm was. As her arm healed, and the writing of the book came along, she was able to practice her "Gap Time" reactions and examine where her own beliefs came from. In this book, Deborah invites us to examine our own beliefs, to develop our gap time, to still our minds, to become free from reacting to the Kleshas, and to become sourced from within.

In this series of videos and in her book, Deborah Adele talks about how Yoga has given name to the process of seeking happiness, and the pitfalls affecting us all: the 5 Kleshas - which can mire us in suffering.

The Kleshas are described by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutra. This teaching  explains why we are anxious, why we are afraid, why things don't seem to go right, and when things do go "right," why we can't hold on to them. Understanding the Kleshas helps us recognize why happiness is so elusive.

Deborah shares how her previous book, The Yamas & Niyamas, led her to a deeper study of yoga philosophy. She realized that the Yamas & Niyamas are the answer and she wondered, "What's the question?" and, "What's the problem?" She realized that the Kleshas are the problem; they gnaw at our happiness and our sense of well-being, creating a spiral of suffering. This realization had her exploring the Kleshas and the Mind, leading to the writing of this book, The Kleshas: Exploring the Elusiveness of Happiness (release date Sept. 1, 2023).
