Demokratien in Gefahr – Literaturnobelpreisträgerin Herta Müller

«Die Freiheit dürfen wir nicht als selbstverständlich betrachten. Sie könnte uns sonst gestohlen werden.» Herta Müller, die renommierte Schriftstellerin und Literatur‪@NobelPrize‬trägerin von 2009,  eröffnete das UBS Center Forum am 13. November 2023 mit einem bewegend-beklemmenden Plädoyer für Demokratie und Freiheit.

Müller wurde 1953 in 🇷🇴 Rumänien geboren, studierte rumänische und deutsche Literatur und arbeitete später als Übersetzerin in einer Maschinenfabrik. Weil sie sich weigerte, ihre Kolleg*innen für den rumänischen Geheimdienst zu bespitzeln, verlor sie ihren Job und geriet selbst ins Visier der Securitate.

1987 kam Herta Müller nach 🇩🇪 Westdeutschland, wo es ihr lange Zeit nicht gelang, das kommunistische Regime Rumäniens abzuschütteln. Die ständige Präsenz der Verfolgung spiegelt sich in ihren zahlreichen preisgekrönten Veröffentlichungen wider.

Democracies around the globe are increasingly under threat. In many countries, populists are gaining ground, polarization is increasing, and voters often fail to vote. Public intellectuals are debating the prospects for post-democratic politics. At the same time, authoritarian regimes are seeing a resurgence. What is driving these trends? And what can be done to reverse them? This was the main topic of our series, which consisted of three events, beginning with a lecture by Wolfgang Schäuble (in German), who provided a political-historical framework of the topic, followed by a talk by experimental psychologist Steven Pinker, who discussed the role of rationality for democratic societies. We concluded with our annual Forum for Economic Dialogue, where experts from various fields discussed the topic from both a political and an economic perspective.
