LOW-COST way to convert your wood lathe to VARIABLE speed (possibly free) treadmill motor

I really wanted to convert our wood lathe to variable speed because there’s a lot of advantages to doing so. I was very close to spending $180 for the conversion, then realize that I had a variable speed DC motor from a treadmill. The conversion was very simple the shaft was the same the mounting bracket was the same and the motor was slightly bigger than the motor I had on the lathe originally. So all in all I’m very happy with the conversion.
