In this Indonesia Travel Vlog, I head to Borobudur Temple: the largest Buddhist temple complex in the world! It's also an UNESCO site and one of the most visited places in Indonesia (along with being the number 1 thing to do in Yogyakarta). There were so many things I was unaware of when trying to plan my trip to Borobudur. I was finding conflicting information about the dress code, the price, and especially about how to get there on public transportation! I found one article that described how to get to Borobudur Temple by bus so I decided to try to follow that. I left my hotel in the center of Yogyakarta and took a Grab taxi to Jombor Terminal in the north of Yogya. The Grab cost 40,000 Rp. Then luckily everyone at the bus station was so nice! A man told me I could get on the bus that was about to leave. It would take 1 hour and cost 25,000 Rp. However, the big bus didn't go the whole way to Borobudur! It actually dropped us at the side of the highway where we had to walk around the corner and take an angkot the remaining 15 minutes to Borobudur temple. The angkot charged us another 15,000 Rp to take us to the entrance of the temple as opposed to the center of town (YES there is a cute little town at Borobudur complete with cafes, restaurants, and hotels!). The total cost to take this public transportation from my hotel in the center of Yogyakarta to Borobudur Temple was 80,000 Rp ($5.28 USD) BUT it was also less convenient due to having to change buses and not being quite sure of which ones to take.
I then got to the entrance. I thought that we wouldn't be allowed to climb the temple as it was previously closed, however you are now allowed to climb it again - as part of a group tour. For foreigners to enter, the price was either 455,000 Rp to climb to the top as part of the group tour or 362,500 Rp to just walk around the base on your own without going up. You NEED to go up!!! (Also I've heard that you cannot climb the temples on Mondays, so avoid that).
I had read online that once you arrive at Borobudur you need to wear a sarong.....however we did not have to. There were people in my group who actually climbed the temple in shorts! The one thing we had to do was change our shoes and wear these cute sandals (which we got to keep) so we didn't damage the stairs of the temple. The top of the temple was absolutely amazing!
After the temple, I had to figure out how to get back to Yogyakarta....which considering the first bus dropped me off at the side of the road, I wasn't sure exactly how to get back. I walked from Borobudur Temple to Terminal Borobudur in the town. It was about a 20 minute walk. Once I arrived, I asked the guy working there about how to get back to Yogyakarta. It turns out there were Damri Vans there at the bus terminal that went directly to Malioboro Street!!! And even better - they were comfy, direct, and only 20,000 Rp!!!!! The only negative is they don't run very frequently.. But if you check the times beforehand, it is SO CONVENIENT!!!
So my public transit trip from Yogyakarta to Borobudur: one grab/taxi and 2 buses for 80,000 Rp
