In September 1995 Westwood Studios released Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn, a game that would go on to define the RTS genre. This was shortly followed by The Covert Ops expansion and then a prequel in Command & Conquer: Red Alert, with its own two expansions, Counterstrike and The Aftermath. Command & Conquer was an evolution of an earlier Westwood game, Dune II. The two are now looked at as the birth of the modern RTS genre in much the same way Wolfenstein 3D and Doom are now looked at as the grandfathers of all modern FPS games. 25 years later these games are widely considered industry classics.

On June 5th 2020, Petroglyph and Lemon Sky Studios released Command & Conquer: Remastered. Every single piece of content from that first generation of C&C games has been faithfully remastered in 4K for modern systems. Over 150 Missions and hours of enhanced FMVs. The remasters also feature the incredible work of Frank Klepacki, who not only went back and worked on the classic tracks, but also performed several of the songs live alongside his band, The Tiberian Sons - Frank Klepacki & The Tiberian Sons LI...

Last year I played through the entire series in preparation for the upcoming remasters. Now that they are here I’m going to use the lessons I learned to play through them a second time. I’ll be showing what I consider to be foolproof methods to complete the levels, some of which are just as challenging today as they were in the 90s. I’ll also show and explain all the various secrets and hidden pieces of mission logic as we go when applicable. This is my first time playing the remasters so I’ll be reacting and commentating on the new look and sound as I experience it.

One of my recent Command & Conquer projects has been to create a chronological mission order for both Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert that includes all their expansions. Those articles were fairly well received so I plan to follow that order in this playthrough.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert tells the story of an alternate history wherein German physicist Albert Einstein travels back in time and prevents Germany from starting World War 2. Achieving his objective, Einstein returns to the present to find that he has managed to prevent World War 2 from ever happening. As our timeline phases out of existence however, it becomes clear that Einstein’s actions have laid the foundations for a new, larger conflict. The USSR is expanding westward and war with the Allies is soon declared. Red Alert follows the course of that war, with its conclusion ultimately dependent on the player’s actions. Will the Soviets succeed in conquering all of Europe? Or will the Allies launch a counterattack and defeat the Soviets in their homeland?

In Red Alert, the player can choose between two factions, Allies or Soviets, each having their own campaign of over a dozen missions. At several points in the story there are branching paths to choose from, the end result being a total of 20+ missions per faction. “Counterstrike” adds sixteen new missions to Red Alert; eight for each faction. There is0 also a hidden four mission “Giant Ant” campaign. “The Aftermath” adds a further eighteen mission; nine for each faction. It also adds a number of new units to each faction; the Field Mechanic, Chrono Tank, Demolition Truck, Phase Transport, Fake Structures, Shock Trooper, Tesla Tank, MAD Tank and Missile Sub.
