Gear 101: How to Use an SPL Meter

Just like many other qualities of sound, loudness is subjective. It's relative, and changes according to person to person. But sound pressure (acoustic pressure caused by the vibration of a sound wave) is not subjective. Knowing a signal's sound pressure level (or SPL) is an important part of calibrating speakers, or examining the acoustic properties of a room. It's also important so that you don't accidentally expose yourself to damagingly high intensity sounds.

An SPL Meter is a great tool for measuring a signal's intensity, and by the end of this video you'll know exactly how to use one.
