Tuesday 29th August would see the final run of the year for Steam Dreams weekly double tour around the South of England. In recent years the format has been two or three trips to Windsor across the morning and afternoon - 'The Royal Windsor Steam Express', followed by a trip around the Surrey Hills in the evening - The Sunset Steam Express'. For 2023 the 'Sunset Steam Express' remained the same however the Windsor trips were replaced by 'The Garden of England Lunchtime Tour'. Starting from London Victoria the tour would run to Dover and return, outward via Swanley, Faversham and Canterbury East, the return via Folkestone, Tonbridge and Sevenoaks. Running most weeks on either a Tuesday or Thursday throughout the summer, the tours were hauled by either Mayflower, Braunton and Britannia.
Tuesday 29th August was due to be hauled by 70000 'Britannia' however after failing whilst hauling the tour the previous week she was replaced by B1 61306 'Mayflower'. For us we frequently have family meet ups at various National Trust places around Kent and for the final week of the Summer Holidays it seemed a perfect opportunity to arrange one for the Tuesday as our journey to Emmetts Garden near Sevenoaks crossed both legs of the route and the timings for 'The Garden of England Lunchtime Tour' fitted in perfectly with a day trip! So we start at Longfield, and the east bound climb of Sole Street and we see 'Mayflower' working through the station heading for Canterbury and Dover. Around four hours later, after a nice time at Emmetts Garden its Hildenborough, and the 1 in 122 climb from Tonbridge to Sevenoaks. Running 6 minutes late we see 'Mayflower' working hard through the station with her heavy load. We finished the day with a cream tea in the Sainsburys Cafe in Otford, a very nice day out!
