Turkey on Sunday (20/7) marked the 23rd anniversary of its
invasion of northern Cyprus with a strong show of solidarity
with the breakaway republic of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf
Denktas.
Turkey sent several ministers to celebrations in Nicosia -
including deputy prime minister Bulent Ecevit - who, as prime
minister in 1974, sent troops to invade and occupy the northern
third of Cyprus in response to a coup aimed at uniting the
island with Greece.
