Last year, we had a new roof put on our barn.  Video:  Our BARN Preservation Project | New R... - This year, our goal is to finish the renovations necessary to preserve it for another 100 years or so.  It was originally built back in the 1870's and was likely the first building built here.  Families would often build a granary first, and live in that while they built their house.  In this video, we're going to tackle phase #1 of our 2023 Project Plan - which is to the raise the barn up about 3" off the ground.  We need to ensure the beams underneath aren't in contact with the earth, and this is one of the best ways we can do that.

Rachel and Todd are working on renovating an old barn, known as the 1870s Homestead building, which is the original homestead land owned by a family with historical significance.
They recently replaced the roof due to water intrusion issues and are now starting phase one of the renovation, which involves jacking up the barn at least 1.5 to 3 inches to prevent further damage to the wooden beams.
The four-phase renovation plan includes removing and replacing the Corn Crib, installing board and batten siding (possibly using Hemlock), and building a new corn crib lean-to on the side.
They're using 40-ton jacks to lift the barn and inserting treated boards between the beams and cinder blocks at each corner to achieve the desired height.
The project involves some risks, such as pinch points, but they believe it's relatively safe. They also consult with the previous owners who did a similar renovation successfully in the past.
