During the last years of the Cold War, another significant conflict was brewing. As tensions rose in the Middle East in the 1980s and early 1990s, the Western world, led by the United States, prepared for the worst.

It was during this time that the old but still reliable Iowa-class sister battleships Wisconsin and Missouri were brought back from stagnation and upgraded to serve in modern times.

The World War 2 veteran ships were ready to serve just in time for Operation Desert Shield, launched after dictator Saddam Hussein stormed into Kuwait in August of 1990 and refused to capitulate.

The mighty battleships would show the world what they were capable of during the now-called Operation Desert Storm.

As an allied Saudi commander put it after witnessing the might of the US battleships against Iraqi defenses: "I wish we had a battleship in our navy."
