Shenzhen, referred to as Shenzhen, also known as Pengcheng, is a city under separate state planning in Guangdong Province, the People's Republic of China, one of the four first-tier cities in China, and one of the central cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It is located on the east coast of the Pearl River Estuary, bordering Daya Bay and Dapeng Bay to the east, Lingding Ocean to the west, Hong Kong to the south, and Huizhou City and Dongguan City to the north. Shenzhen is China's special economic zone and international city approved by the State Council. It is one of the megacities of the People's Republic of China. The Shenzhen Municipal Government is located in the Shenzhen Civic Center on Fuzhong 2nd Road, and the Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee is located in the Municipal Party Committee Building on Shennan Middle Road, Futian District.

In January 1979, Shenzhen was established on the basis of the original Baoan County. In August 1980, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress approved the establishment of China's first special economic zone, the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, in Shenzhen. Shenzhen has developed rapidly due to reform and opening up, rising from a border agricultural county to a first-tier city in the country. In 2016, Shenzhen surpassed Guangzhou to become the third largest city in mainland China in terms of economic aggregate. In the list of global cities released by GaWC in 2020, Shenzhen once again entered the Alpha-level, ranking 46th. It is also one of the six world first-tier cities (Alpha level) selected in Greater China. The Shenzhen metropolitan area, which consists of Shenzhen City (including Shenzhen-Shantou Special Cooperation Zone), all of Dongguan City, and parts of Huizhou City, is one of the most economically powerful urban areas in South China and even the country.

High-tech industry, finance industry, modern logistics industry, and cultural and creative industry are the four pillar industries of Shenzhen. Shenzhen is an important high-tech R&D and manufacturing base in southern China and is often known as "China's Silicon Valley". The container throughput of Shenzhen Port has ranked third in the world for many consecutive years, and its total foreign trade exports have ranked first in mainland China for more than 20 consecutive years. Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport is the fifth largest civil aviation airport in China. The Shenzhen Stock Exchange ranked first in the world in terms of number of initial public offerings from 2009 to 2015 and is an important financing platform for Chinese companies. Shenzhen is one of the national comprehensive supporting reform pilot zones. In 2019, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council supported Shenzhen in building a pioneer demonstration zone for socialism with Chinese characteristics, undertaking the important mission of experimentation and demonstration in China's institutional innovation and wider opening-up.
