Though Syrio suffered defeat hand-in-hand with the Starks, his words and overall mentorship lived on in his student. As Arya fought and grew, encountering deadly obstacles and conflicts in her own life, she often found the lessons of Syrio Forel applied more than she’d originally imagined. Syrio’s mentorship meant more in his death than it did in his life, making him a unique paragon figure. He was never in the spotlight, never a main driver of the narrative as many mentors are. Instead, his teachings lingered in the background until suddenly they reflected Arya Stark’s growth as a person and a warrior.
