Did you know not all fats are foes to your heart? Here are two types of fat that favor your health. Monounsaturated fats, like olive and peanut oil, are liquid at room temperature but thicken in the fridge. They're heart helpers, improving cholesterol levels when they replace saturated fats.

Polyunsaturated fats, including omega-3-rich canola, sunflower and walnut oils, stay liquid always. They're champions for your cholesterol and heart health, reducing disease risks.

Saturated fats, found in butter, lard, and coconut oil, are solid at room temp and not so heart-healthy.

Hydrogenated fats, like shortening, are also solid and primarily saturated fat. Examples include premade pie crusts, refrigerated doughs and rolls. Limit these types of fat to keep your heart happy.

Fats that contain trans fats are the bad guys, raising bad cholesterol and lowering the good. The FDA has cracked down on these heart-harmers in the food supply.

Stock up on olive, canola and walnut oils. They're versatile, heart-healthy, and delicious in dishes from salads to baked goods. They're easy, tasty and good for your heart.

If you have concerns about fat in your diet or heart health, schedule an appointment with the nutrition or cardiology experts at Mayo Clinic Health System.
