Sensory integration therapy is used to help children learn to use all their senses together – that is, touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. It's claimed that this therapy can improve difficulties associated with autism, like challenging behaviour or repetitive behaviour.
Sensory integration focuses primarily on three basic senses–tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive.
In traditional SI therapy, the OT exposes a child to sensory stimulation through repetitive activities. The OT gradually makes activities more challenging and complex. The idea is that through repetition, your child's nervous system will respond in a more “organized” way to sensations and movement.
Sensory integration helps build the mental and physical framework within an individual's nervous system to properly perceive sensory input, regulate his or her responses, and understand the significance behind a particular, texture, movement, or sound.
Sensory processing issues are a form of autism spectrum disorder. Fact: Having sensory processing issues isn't the same thing as having autism spectrum disorder. But sensory challenges are often a key symptom of autism.

Sensory processing disorder is a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. Formerly referred to as sensory integration dysfunction, it is not currently recognized as a distinct medical diagnosis
While SPD may affect the child's auditory, visual, and motor skills, and the ability to process and sequence information, it is not, at present, specifically identified as a qualifying disability, making a child eligible for special education and related services.
