Hey guys! Last year I uploaded a tutorial for a small diamond pattern using double half hitch knots. I received a few comments that people were having trouble with this pattern so I have an updated tutorial to share with you today. This tutorial explains the pattern in more detail and is slower. Let’s get started!

Set up - Cut 6 pieces of 3mm string, each piece is 2 meters in length. Fold each piece in half and attach to your dowel using Lark’s Head knots.

This pattern uses 4 strands to create a small diamond. We need to tie one DHHK with the two middle cords before using them as filler cords to create the middle section of the diamond. One middle cord will be using at the filler cord and one will be used as the working cord. I will use the middle cord on the LHS as my filler cord and the other as my working cord.

We will now use these two cords as our filler cords to create the middle section of the diamond. Working on the right tie a DHHK - remember that the middle cord will be used as your filler cord and the cord to the right of it will be used as your working cord.

Repeat that process on the left side of your work using the middle cord as your filler cord and the cord to the left of it as your working cord.

We have created the top half of the diamond now we will create the bottom half. Working on the left, use the same cord as your filler cord and the same cord as your working cord except now tie your DHHK working to the right. Working on the right, use the same cord as your filler cord and the same cord as your working cord except now tie you DHHK working to the left.

We will tie one more DHHK with the two middle cords. Since I used the middle cord on the LHS as my filler cord at the top of the diamond I will do that again now at the bottom of the diamond.

To create continuous diamonds using this pattern only one knot is tied to connect the diamond at the top and the diamond underneath. So we will now tie our DHHKs to create the middle section of the diamond.

Since I have continued to use the middle cord on the LHS as my filler cord and the cord on the right as my working cord it has created a nice repeating pattern within my work.

Now I will show you how to tie an alternating small diamond pattern. As I mentioned earlier this pattern uses 4 cords. I have 12 cords hanging from my dowel so I created 3 small diamonds across the top of my work.

To create an alternating diamond we will skip the first two cords on the left and tie a small diamond with the next 4 cords. Tie one more diamond with the next 4 cords.

For my third row I am going to tie one more diamond in the middle of my work to create a V shape. If you want to continue with this alternating pattern instead you can tie rows of 3 then 2 diamonds.

Another variation to this pattern would be to create an hourglass shape by tying 2 then 3 diamonds for your 4th and 5th rows.

Thanks for watching!
