This Bankrate video is about when and how to refinance a home / mortgage. Current refinance rates today are, as you might know, at close to all-time low, at least when this video was filmed. Briana explains many of the considerations for refinancing a mortgage. First off, the mortgage refinancing is not free (there are fees involved and it does take time), but there's a chance that you could save a heck of a lot of money. The quick rule of thumb for refinancing your mortgage is whether or not it: (1) will save you money, (2) help you build equity in your home or (3) allow you to pay off your mortgage faster. If you check any of the three, it might be worth it, but in many cases it might check all three, in which case it likely is a fantastic time to refinance your mortgage.
Mortgage Refinance Rates: As you know, mortgage interest rates, and in particular refinance rates, change over time, they are not constant, unless you lock in a rate with a fixed-rate mortgage. As of this posting of this video, refi rates around just over 3%, which is historically incredibly low. If you have a mortgage rate of above 5% it might be worth considering refinancing. Ultimately you need to consider not just current refinance rates for your home, but also what your current mortgage rate is like.
Major Lenders: There are hundreds of mortgage lenders out there—some are online only, but many are brick and mortar banks. Some fo the biggest players in home refinance rates are Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, and Quicken Loans.
