Situated approximately three kilometers east of Zermatt in the Swiss canton of Valais, the GORNERGRAT 3'135 m with its magnificent view of the Matterhorn 4'478 m, is nestled between the Gorner Glacier and the Findel Glacier.
GORNERGRAT with a stunning panorama view of more than 20 peaks of 4'000 m high mountains, including the majestic Monte Rosa, the iconic Matterhorn, and the impressive Liskamm.
The GORNERGRAT Railway extends from Zermatt 1'620 m through Riffelalp 2'222 m and Riffelberg 2'600 m to the summit of Gornergrat, overcoming a difference in altitude of almost 1'500 meters. The terminal station 3'089 m on the southwest tip of the ridge is home to the Kulmhotel, recognized as the highest mountain hotel in Switzerland. A modern cable car connecting Furi to Riffelberg links the GORNERGRAT ski area with the Klein Matterhorn ski area.
Tourism began to flourish in the GORNERGRAT region as early as the 1870s. A significant milestone was the opening of the former Hotel Belvédère in 1896. The momentum continued with the inauguration of the GORNERGRAT Railway in 1898, marking Switzerland's first fully electrified cogwheel railway. This groundbreaking innovation led to a rapid increase in tourist influx to the region.
Zermatt quickly recognized the significance of GORNERGRAT as a tourist destination. Consequently, they constructed the Kulmhotel from 1897 to 1907, which still stands on the GORNERGRAT today. This strategic move contributed to enhancing the appeal of the location for visitors and solidifying its position as a prominent destination in the emerging tourism sector.
125 years of the Gornergrat Railway on August 20, 2023: A radiant anniversary, a golden legacy. The golden locomotive 3003 and its captivating history are now a prominent attraction on the GORNERGRAT. The familiar face of the historic Lok He 2/2 3003, one of the three locomotives of the first generation of the GORNERGRAT Railway, has been restored, gilded, and prominently placed at the summit. A short thematic trail, adorned with exciting information about the discovery of GORNERGRAT and the pioneering efforts in building the cogwheel railway, guides visitors downhill to this impressive monument against a unique mountain backdrop.
The GORNERGRAT is renowned not only for its spectacular views but also for the diversity of activities it offers. Hiking enthusiasts can explore numerous trails, while skiers can enjoy the well-connected ski area.
