How Does Nature Inspire Architecture?

Architects and scientists have found inspiration from animals to create better-living conditions for humans. The animals in question are termites; termites can construct amazingly tall skyscrapers, although the towers are made from dirt. Mick Pearce, a Zimbabwean architect, is someone who these creepy crawlies have inspired. Pearce thought that the chimneys at the top of the mound let hot air hot and keep the bottom of the mound cool.

Pearce approached his team with this thought, and they designed two towers connected by an atrium. Fans were placed at the bottom of each tower to push cool, ground-level air toward the top of the building through ducts. Pearce continued with this approach and built similarly designed buildings in Melbourne, Australia, and Shenzhen, China.

In a world where we are tackling climate change and temperatures continue to rise, self-cooling buildings could be the best option for us now.
It’s possible in the future that we will see more architects shine a light on nature’s ideas to solve our building problems.
