Chaucer's Canterbury Tales are tales of a pilgrimage through space. Dawkins' The Ancestor's Tale is a tale of a pilgrimage through time.  It is a scaffold for our journey back through time to see who we were as a function of time. The tales of our ancestors are written in the branch of the phylogenetic tree that leads to us.
