In this video, we are going to differentiate between Nitrate Nitrite Nitrite. Nitrate, nitrite and nitride are often confused when it comes to writing the formula for an ionic compound. This is mainly because their spelling are quite close and often confused - they end with Ate Ite Ide.
Keep in mind that ate and ite represent polyatomic ions. "ate" has more oxygen while "ite" has less oxygen. Take nitrate for example, NO₃⁻. It has 3 oxygens (more). Whereas nitrite, NO₂⁻, has 2 oxygens (lesser)
"Ide" usually represents monoatomic ion, which means ion-containing only 1 atom. Nitride in this example has this formula, N³⁻.
In this video, we will look at how to differentiate monoatomic and polyatomic ions. Monoatomic ions are ions that contain only 1 atom. Polyatomic ions on the other hand are ions that contain more than 1 atom. In this example, nitride, N³⁻, is a monoatomic ion. Nitrate, NO₃⁻ and nitrite, NO₂⁻ are polyatomic ions.
We will also form ionic compounds using calcium ion, Ca²⁺ with the monoatomic ion, N³⁻ as well as with the polyatomic ions, nitrate, NO₃⁻ and nitrite, NO₂⁻. Do watch all the way till the end to see the difference between the name and formula of ionic compound formed with monoatomic and polyatomic ions.
