Clicking noise of death.  Not something you want to hear coming from a harddrive containing your baby's birth video and other backups that you weren't wanting to lose.

This is the first time that a harddrive has seized functioning on me.  And is also my only Seagate brand harddrive.  This is a ST3000DM001 model drive.

I was hoping that this would be an easy fix after searching general fixes online.  Found one where the heads get stuck over the platter.  So I decided to remove the six screws from the harddrive and took off the cover to reveal its guts.  Sadly, the heads weren't stuck over the platter. Also, I saw what looked like black toner over the platters.  Not sure what caused this or what triggered this to occur/if it was like this before I removed the cover.  I am hoping I didn't cause irreversible damage to the drive.  Anyway, from what I can guess...the heads on the drive need to be replaced.  I wanted to get your opinion on what it could be.  If this is something that can easily be fixable or if you recommend that I go see a data recovery specialist to repair my drive and who you recommend that I see.

***UPDATE 2/14/2015
A couple months back, I found the videos that I thought were only on this Seagate showing my child's birth.  A HUGE relief.  The rest of the data on this drive were mostly backups such as Microsoft Windows that I got from my old Technet subscription.  Not worth time or money in attempting to restore, so will take a loss and move on.

My reddit post: Reddit: seagate_drive_died_what_to_do.  One person suggested going to http://www.300dollardatarecovery.com/.  Almost went there because of the low price and decent reviews.

Going to end up keeping this drive as a historical museum piece.  I'm sure it will look ancient come 5-10yrs from now.  Especially if/when SSD drives take over.

For those with the same issue and harddrive, please feel free to post comments for help or solutions.  Thanks for watching.
