"He was, he was probably just as surprised as everybody else by the unforeseen outcome of the elections. But he he saw only the opportunity part of the outcome, which for him is very great. He's right to view it as an opportunity as far as he's concerned, and he, and he took it and ran with it as hard, as hard as he could, essentially to create a dynamic in which his uncomfortable partners within the left wing coalition would sort of be psychologically cowed into recognizing his primacy. We'll see whether that worked or not."

"I'm quite worried about the his ability to remain a key player, because when you have had a success and his own party has had a serious success, the so-called La France Insoumise (France Unbowed), when you've just had a success, it's very difficult to argue with that success. And although many in his own party, in that extreme left party are uncomfortable with Mr Mélenchon - it's not simply the moderates who are uncomfortable with him. It's even the hardline guys (that) are uncomfortable, well, you know, this guy has proven to be a successful strategist during these elections."

STORYLINE:
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the Far-left leader who has claimed victory in France's latest elections, is a seasoned politician known for his powerful oratory and ambition.
A long-standing figure on the French left, Mélenchon first rose to prominence in the Socialist Party and as a senator.
But it was not until 2016, when he founded the hard-left La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) party, that his profile truly matched his political aspirations.
Mélenchon has called on French President Emmanuel Macron to step down or choose a new Prime Minister from the ranks of his New Popular Front alliance. Macron is two years into his second term and will be ineligible to run again in the next presidential elections in 2027.
