Yellow crowned night heron call
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron is found along the coasts of southeastern North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of South America. Unlike the similar, Black-crowned Night-Heron, it forages alone and is quite secretive.
The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron shares the same medium stocky build of the Black-crowned Night-Heron, but the distinctive white crown and cheek patch make for striking black-and-white head pattern. Neck and body are bluish gray. Feathers of the mantle, back, and wing coverts have black centers with light gray edges, giving a scaled appearance. Legs are yellowish green, turning coral pink to scarlet during courtship. Its call is similar to the "Woc" call of the Black-crowned Night-Heron but has a higher pitch.
The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron feeds mostly on crustaceans, with crabs being its favorite, hence its coastal distribution. It uses a variety of foraging methods that are influenced by the presence or absence of vegetation; where plants are sparse, they mostly stand and wait. On shorelines with more plants, they will peer and walk slowly while searching for their prey. Yellow-crowned Night-Herons will even use their wings to form a canopy over the water, as seen in the video, before lunging with their bill. If the prey is small, the heron will pick it up and swallow it whole.
"Yellow-crowned night-heron females lay three to six pale blue-green eggs, approximately three weeks after their arrival at breeding territories. The eggs are incubated by both adults for 21 to 27 days. Each parent may incubate the eggs for 14 to 18 hours before being relieved by its mate."
