The Emerson Collection is a blend of comfort and durability. The Emerson Chairs and Stools have a natural feel and elegant look, which makes it perfect for indoors and outdoors. In this Pottery Barn video, Furniture Engineer, Alain, shows how the Emerson handcrafted chairs and stools are made.
The Emerson Collection is also known as Kenny in Chinese. It was used in the 16th and 17th century by high-ranking people in China. Materials including rattan and banana leaves are found in abundance in Indonesia. Rattan is easily harvested without damaging the surroundings, while banana leaves are used for making the seats of the handcrafted chairs. Most of the work is done by hand using rattan wood. The rattan log is boiled and then taken to a table, where the back is steam-bent and held in place with ropes.
The Emerson chair is very special because it uses local traditional construction technique, which means using less and minimum material for a strong and durable piece. This handcrafted chair is designed to look antique, but is very comfortable. The arms and back are designed into perfect curves for good support. The seat is made from banana leaves that are dried and woven into rush-style seat.
