Once rivals of the Medici family, the Pitti family commissioned architect Brunelleschi to build a grand palace, larger and more lavish than the Medici's. Construction began in 1440, aiming to create a residence that could dwarf the Medici palace. However, economic troubles halted the project, leaving it unfinished. Ironically, in 1550, the palace was acquired by Eleonora di Toledo, wife of Cosimo I de Medici. Under the Medici rule, the palace doubled in size and became a flourishing hub of the Oltrarno neighborhood. Today, the palace houses an impressive array of museums, including the Galleria Palatina, Galleria d'arte Moderna, Royal Apartments, Museo degli Argenti, and more.
