The figures are the average meshes for the hippocampal subfields cornu ammonis (CA) 1, CA2/3, CA4 and the subiculum, and the results obtained using shape analysis with metric optimization for computational anatomy (MOCA) software. The color maps denote t-maps of group differences in vertex-wise radial thickness between normal controls (NC) and patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) after controlling for age, sex, study location and scanner type. Negative values (cool colors) denote regions where radial thickness is reduced in MCI compared to controls, while positive values (warm colors) denote regions where radial thickness is increased in MCI compared NC.

Significant radial thickness differences were observed within regions of the CA1 subfield and subiculum, where radial thickness is reduced in MCI compared to NC (this can be observed in the p-map color map).

Data used for these analyses were obtained through the ADNI-3 study. In total, 195 patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (88 F, Mean age: 65.8 ± 8.2 years) and 427 cognitive normal controls (257 F, mean age: 73.1 ± 7.3 years) were included. Patients were classified with amnestic mild cognitive impairment if they express a subjective memory concern and scored below education-adjusted cutoffs for a delayed memory task, with otherwise preserved general cognitive abilities.
