Highways England has submitted a planning application for the abandonment of Queensbury Tunnel, a disused railway structure between Bradford and Halifax. The work is expected to cost around £5 million - delivering absolutely no value for money - and involves allowing most of the tunnel to collapse beneath the populated part of Queensbury.
But there is a better option. The tunnel is a strategic connector and could form part of a new cycle route between Bradford District and Calderdale. Over 30 years, it would deliver an estimated £37.6 million in social, economic and tourism benefits at a benefit:cost ratio of 2.31:1. That represents High value for money.
If you can see the vision, please help us secure the tunnel for a positive future use. You can object to Highways England's planning application and comment on it by visiting Bradford Council's planning portal: tiny.cc/TunnelPlans
Thank you for your support.
