The last match between Portugal and France ended in a 2-2 draw at the previous UEFA European Championships, with three of the goals being penalties. Portugal will be wary of the French challenge here though, as they have lost 11 of the last 14 H2Hs (W1, D2). More recently however, they have been beaten in only three of their last 19 matches (W16), but one of those defeats came against Georgia (2-0) at this tournament.
France made it to their third quarter-final in the last four European Championships with a 1-0 win over Belgium on Monday, but their performances at Euro 2024 have been far from convincing. Les Bleus have just three goals to their name in Germany, but none from open play by one of their own players, as the two-time European champions continue to toil in attack.
They have been enjoying success at the other end at least, having kept five clean sheets in their last six games. Those defensive strengths could help prolong this encounter, as five of France’s last seven matches at the Euros have been level after 90 minutes (W2, D5).
Players to watch: Kylian Mbappé has found wearing a protective face mask “quite difficult” following his broken nose, as he looks to make his mark in Germany. Interestingly, he has scored only once in seven appearances at these championships during his career to date, with that goal coming against Poland in this edition. Bruno Fernandes netted Portugal’s third in their 3-0 victory over Turkey at this tournament, extending his 100% record when scoring for the national side (W17).
Hot stat: Just three of Portugal’s last ten matches at the Euros have seen both teams score.
