This is accomplished by changing the blend mode of the overlay clip in the effect controls panel, under opacity. Depending on the clip, you'll want to remove the darks or the highlights to get your desired effect. Blend modes like multiply or screen may do the trick. Other times you may want to try one of the others to match your desired style.
