Scream Breakdown
* On Nov. 21, it broke that Spyglass had fired Melissa Barrera from the upcoming seventh Scream movie over social media posts that company decision-makers characterized as antisemitic.
* Before her firing, sources say her deal to return as Sam Carpenter, the lead character she introduced in 2022’s Scream, had been finalized.
* On Nov. 22 it was announced that Jenna Ortega had exited the movie months ago and that even though Spyglass was saying it came down to scheduling issues, she actually asked for more money because of how successful her shows like Wednesday had become and Spyglass said no.
* I don’t really see an issue with that either since it’s been an open secret that talent pay has been low on Scream 5 and 6, even compared to what Neve Campbell made back on the original Scream in the 90’s.
* Jenna Ortega was asking for high seven figures as a sort of statement that she wasn’t being paid enough and she anticipated that Spyglass wouldn’t bite and it seems like she was right.
* The Hollywood Reporter also says that the head of Spyglass, Gary Barber, is a cheap dude which adds up considering he didn’t budge on paying Neve Campbell more to come back for Scream 6 and ultimately had the script rewritten so that it wouldn’t include her.
* He’s feeling confident on this play for Scream 7 because back when Neve exited Scream 6, a lot of people thought it would bomb but it ended up being the highest grossing movie in the Scream franchise.
* I think that came down to a lot of factors ranging from the new setting of New York City, the nostalgia bait Ghostface museum and the movie coming off a positively received reboot and despite Scream 6’s box office performance, people definitely weren’t as high on it as they were 5 which I genuinely don’t get but that’s fine. That’s not the topic of this video.
* He’s also probably sitting there thinking that the ending of Scream 6 wraps up the Carpenter sisters’ story well enough and I guess you could look at it that way but there’s still a lit of unanswered questions and stuff on the table that could easily be tackled in a third movie.
* Anyway, despite all this, both the new director, Christopher Landon and James Vanderbilt who wrote 5 and 6 are still attached so it doesn’t look like it’s a completely doom and gloom scenario.
* Also when all this happened, Landon tweeted out that “Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.” And like that’s 100% a situation where if you don’t have anything to say outside of a copout like that then just stay quiet. It literally hurts you to talk in most scenarios where the fans are in an uproar, justified or not
* With the two previous leads gone, Vanderbilt and his partner Guy Busick are rewriting the script and just like with Scream 6, a lot of the set pieces look like they’re going to stay the same everything around them is going to change which is risky because as much as I liked Scream 6, the reveal was the messiest part of the whole thing and the reasoning for that was the script rewrite.
* As for the leads, the goal is allegedly to bring back Neve Campbell and also Patrick Dempsey to co-star with her and outside of all this drama and stuff, I want to make that clear, it would be cool to see him back in Scream after how awesome he was in Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving. The dude has a future in horror that’s all I’m saying.
* Still that’s a pretty ambitious goal considering she’s probably still pissed they wouldn’t pay her to come back for 6 and honestly rightfully so. I didn’t really think she mattered much in Scream 5 but having her name attached is what normal people who don’t keep up with all the movie news online
