Kansai Clean Service’s work has been recognized by The Times newspaper in November 2021 in an article by Richard Lloyd Parry. It introduces readers to the fast growing phenomenon of “Kodokushi” or lonely de**h in Japan. Exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, lonely de**h is when a person di*s alone, usually in their place of residence and then remains undiscovered for a long period of time. The Times article refers to a specific case undertaken by Kansai Clean Service in which a man in his 60s di*d alone in his flat, most likely due to heatstroke. The article also explains some of the reasons why lonely de**hs are increasing in Japanese society, how Kansai Cleaning Service goes about clearing homes where they happen and the effects of such de**hs on both himself, his staff and the bereaved family.

The area around where the body was found was infested with carrion beetles. Carrion beetles are insects well known for one of their main food sources being decaying organic matter, such as dead animals. In Japan they are known as “Shidemushi” or “Insects that appear after de**h”. They are also known for burying carcasses by unearthing the soil underneath it and so the Japanese characters for “Shidemushi” also translates to “Burial ground insect”. They also feed on the larvae of flies that are commonly found in carcasses.
