“Boy….that’s a great thing” pretty well sums up this incredible song. This “M and the P” song made it to #5 on the charts and is #8 this week.

Dick Clark mentions that they made the record “twice” which isn’t quite accurate. There are actually 3 different versions of the song. There are 2 different versions on the “The Mamas & The Papas Deliver” mono and stereo albums released in Feb. and the single, mono, version released in April (the version they are dancing to here). The album versions do not include the horn section, have differences in the flute solo, and have differences in the final line “becoming a reality”. The stereo album version is the one most commonly played today, (like on Spotify or Pandora and on their Greatest Hits albums). The “Deliver” album title refers, tongue in cheek, to the fact that Mama Cass was pregnant at the time, which was kept secret due the fact that she was not married.

Dancers: There are many AB regulars in this clip. Here are the ones I spotted: 0:43 Theodosia Dayton (in back), 1:06 Paul Gilbert, 1:10 Frank Herrera, 1:17 Dan Snell dancing with Pat Moriarty, 1:30 Frank Vanderpuil, 1:40 Don Sanuskar (very back in front of the riser), 2:10 Buddy Schwimmer dancing with Olivia Favela, 2:31 Peggy Waggoner, 2:49 Mike Langham, 2:51 Roni Menacker, 3:00 Frankie Riggilio (in back), 3:34 Tracy Silver dancing next to John Pollard (in glasses), and 3:06 Jim Miranda dancing with Debbie Kane (on the riser).

…..And if you didn’t get enough of “Creeque Alley” (pronounced “creaky” alley) today on Bandstand, The Mama’s & the Papas will perform it tomorrow night, June 11, on The Ed Sullivan Show on CBS “for all you youngsters out there across the country”. There, Mama Cass would describe the song, written by John Phillips, as “an epic tone poem of historical nature describing our very get together” as it explains how the group formed (sort of) while vacationing at a place called Creque’s Alley in the Virgin Islands.
