Here's some techniques in the Chimney Safety Institute of America's continuing series on how to enjoy the cozy warmth of your masonry fireplace. One of the ways you can do that involves how to stack your wood. *Note: If your heating appliance has a grate, make sure to use it. A grate lifts the firewood off the chimney floor allowing air to circulate better providing a cleaner burn.

After you've had an inspection of your chimney (using a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep, located at http://www.csia.org/search) and it's ready for use, here's how one of our experts suggests going about the wood-stacking process.

Begin with the largest pieces at the bottom and begin stacking. Keep stacking smaller layers until you've filled about ½ of the open area. Then, begin stacking kindling. Watch the video for more!
