In this fly tying video, I am tying a Black Gnat dry fly (Bibio Johannis).
The term Gnat is a general way of describing a large number of small two wing (Dipterid) flies. This pattern leans more towards a common Gnat in the UK called a Bibio Johannis. Although tied smaller, it can represent many other small black two winged flies. As far as the life cycle goes, typically from a fly fishing point of view, we pretty much just concern ourselves with the adult stage as terrestrial fly. You may also come across this dry fly with a tail along with other Variations such as Goddard's Black Gnat which primarily has a different material for the wings.
