Often called "Lento con gran espressione" or "Reminiscence," it gained fame through poignant historical moments. Holocaust survivor Natalia Karp played this piece for Nazi commandant Amon Goeth, who was so moved that he spared her life. The renowned Polish pianist Władysław Szpilman, portrayed in the film "The Pianist," performed it during Warsaw's last radio broadcast in 1939. Szpilman also played it for German officer Wilm Hosenfeld, who later helped him survive the war.
