Lanzarote, one of the Canary
Lanzarote, one of the Canary islands off the coast of West Africa administered by Spain, is known for its year-round warm weather, beaches and volcanic landscape. Timanfaya National Park’s rocky landscape was created by volcanic eruptions in the 1730s.
It is located approximately 125 kilometres (80 miles) off the north coast of Africa and 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) from the Iberian Peninsula. With 152,289 inhabitants at the start of 2019,it is the third most populous Canary Island, after Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Located in the centre-west of the island is Timanfaya National Park, one of its main attractions. The island was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1993.Timanfaya is the only one of Spain's 15 national parks with a geological nature. Its rarity lies in the fact that the lava casts have created an ecosystem dominated by the most varied land formations you could imagine. Tiny craters, hollows and tubes burst everywhere, creating landscapes that seem to be part of another planet.
East-coast resort Puerto del Carmen is home to whitewashed villas, beaches and dive centers.
The island's capital is Arrecife, which lies on the eastern coastline.
