We last visited Burnby Hall Gardens when they had their Tulip Festival in April 2019 almost 4 years ago and there has been many changes to some parts since then making another visit there even more enjoyable.

The “Rock Garden” was fully restored as part of their Golden Jubilee Project 2016- 2019 and now comprises a variety of plants and colours.
The original Edwardian Summerhouse and adjoining Potting Shed, were also fully restored as part of their Golden Jubilee Restoration Project 2016- 19. There you can see the Aviary that contains cockatiels, budgerigars and zebra finches,
The “Walled Garden Project” once the Victorian Garden, has been underway since last winter 2021 and into spring 2022 to create a new modern-style garden.
The Upper Lake was fully restored as part of their Golden Jubilee Restoration Project 2016-19.
The Birch Walk was also newly replanted and of course we visited the Stumpery but on this visit I did not go into the small Secret Garden.
Burnby Hall Gardens also has a National Collection of Hardy Waterlilies (Nymphaea) which can be seen at their best from mid-June until the end of August.
The Lakes were originally created by Major Stewart for fishing, and in 1935 the first waterlilies were planted in them. Today the Lakes hold thousands of Carp, Roach and Rudd, some of which are very large and can be hand fed by visitors with fish food purchased at the Visitor Centre.
Thank you for viewing.

A Brief History  - Burnby Hall was originally purchased by Percy and Katharine Stewart in 1901and was originally called “The Elms” but they renamed the house “Ivy Hall” and commenced three years of renovation which saw its transformation into an opulent Edwardian residence. The Stewarts had no children but had decided in 1912 to leave their estate in trust to the people of Pocklington on their deaths. This very generous gesture resulted in the Stewarts Trust being established in 1964 to ensure that the Gardens and Museum Collection were maintained and preserved for future generations to enjoy.
In 2007, the existing Stewart Museum was replaced by a bespoke building, financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The HLF also funded an extensive Golden Jubilee Restoration Project of the Upper Lake, Rock Garden and Edwardian Summerhouse between 2016 and 2019.
The Gardens are now a high-profile attraction, with around 97,000 customers visiting them every  year and I am so pleased that we have the chance to visit whenever we can.
